Description Muddy Brook Wildlife Management Area in Hardwick is divided into two sections: the Jackson Road section to the north and the Patrill Hollow section to the south. The Jackson Road section is over two hundred acres of mostly early successional habitat represented by a diverse assortment of wetlands and actively managed abandoned pastures. The WMA is centered on Muddy Brook as its winds from its headwaters in Great Swamp just east of Jackson Road. This stretch of Muddy Brook is slow and supports extensive acidic tussock marsh, leatherleaf mats, buttonbush thickets and spruce-tamarack swamp. Directly complementing these wetlands are acres of upland shrubland, and between the two habitats a wide array of early successional birds is supported. From Hardwick Center, follow route 32A north approximately 0.5 miles to the intersection with North Road (near the large cemetery). Bear right onto North Road and follow it approximately 0.75 miles to the intersection with Jackson Road (at the second farm). Bear left onto Jackson Road. At about 0.5 miles you will come to a dip in the road with a nice wetland on the left. This wetland is always worth a quick look. In about another 0.5 miles you will see a rough pullout on the left with a MassWildlife sign. Park here to access the southern units of this WMA, which will be the origin of the follow description.
