| Description |
Todd's five miles of trails pass through many diverse communities, including: oak-hickory forest, hemlock forest, old logging sites, an old limestone quarry, a pond, meadows and streams. Enjoy a walk along our beautiful trails! Trails are well-maintained, but rustic. Loop Trail is Todd's longest trail, half of which follows the sanctuary's perimeter. Loop trail passes the pond and leads through various forest habitats, including upland deciduous forest and the edges of hemlock ravines. Ravine trail is a dead-end trail, with one option to join Loop Trail after about 1/3 mile. The trail follows Watson's Run through mixed hemlock-deciduous forest. There are several rocky stream crossings that require wading or challenging rock-hopping. Indian Pipe Trail is one of the Sanctuary's easiest walking trails. Named after the whitish, pipe-like plant that appears on the forest floor in early July, the trail leads through upland forest in the middle of the Sanctuary. Polypody trail is named after the small, evergreen polypody fern that grows on large boulders along the western section of the trail. Hemlock trail leads from upland forest to shady streamside hemlock groves. There is soggy footing in places during wet weather. This trail follows an old logging road built in the late 1950's, when many hemlock trees were cut down after being killed by a looper moth outbreak. Pond trail meanders through former meadows that were once farm fields and have reverted to crab apple thickets and finally to young deciduous forest. The trail splits at the pond (built in 1969) and connects with Loop Trail in two places.
