Description |
The Irvine Open Space Preserve comprises a significant portion of the City’s protected natural landscape, which includes parks, greenbelts, trails and wildlands. The Preserve was first established in 1988 when Irvine voters approved the Irvine Open Space Initiative, which provided for the permanent protection of a contiguous network of conservation and open space lands. Currently more than 5,200 acres, the Preserve is a mosaic of some of the most rare and biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, including wetlands, oak woodlands, grasslands and coastal sage scrub. The Preserve is more than 7,000 acres of habitats nearly equally divided between the City’s Southern and Northern spheres. It is made up of a mosaic of native habitats including wetlands, grasslands, oak woodlands and rare coastal sage scrub. And, like the rest of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, it is home to some of the most biologically diverse natural communities in the world. This scenic land is also a haven for rare and endangered plants and wildlife and is celebrated as a special place for recreation and respite.
